Our Lyricking Methods

This page probably seems remarkably stupid and lame and whatever, but everyone lyrics differently, and if you are confused about certain methods I/we used, or odd characters or something, this page might help. I think most of it is understood or easily figured out, but just in case, here's a little help!

• Contacting Me: First and foremost, my email address is [email protected]. If you find ANY mistakes, no matter how huge or how pittling they might be, or how right/wrong you think you are, PLEASE let me know (I know I keep repeating myself, all over the place, but it's really important!) I may decide not to correct it, but then again, I might. Rest assured I *WILL* give it total consideration, though! At any rate, *DETAILED* info is best when sending corrections. It doesn't have to be too detailed, but the name of the song and version (if there is more than one) would be very helpful, as well as what lines are deemed faulty and, obviously, what the corrections are. Please try to be as coherent as possible because I'm pretty stupid and easily confused. If I get an email that says "It should be *such and such* in that song." I won't have a clue what you're talking about! A good example would be (the words in the asteriks being replaced by the actual song name/line or phrase and corrections, of course...): "In *this* song, in the "*please quote the line or phrase*" line/phrase, *such and such* words are wrong, and should be *such and such* instead." That's just an example of what you could/should do, but it would be greatly appreciated.

• Songs I Don't Have: This is very important as well. There are several songs I don't have, whether I am aware of this or not. This page is pretty much complete with all the songs I own. I will list every one I have, even if I cannot successfully lyric it. If you have a song (or a different version of one I have) and you do *NOT* see it listed on my site, *PLEASE* let me know. And better still, if you happen to have that song(s) or know where to obtain them, contact me and I will try to arrange a file transfer. Any "donations" would be wonderful, and more appreciated than you'll probably know, but if you want, I can trade you a song that you need. Just email me and we can work out particulars. So far I know I need:
  Time Out (Studio version?)
  
  Inside You (though this might be Inside with a messed up name...)
  
  ANY alternate versions of Did It There (that I don't already have)
  
  And I think there were a few others. Again, just because it's not listed here, doesn't mean I don't need it. If you happen to see I am missing something you have, or know of, please let me know, and if there is a way to trade it to me/give it to me/or let me know where I can obtain it, that's even better! It would also be helpful to you if you happen to want to see written lyrics of a particular song not in my possession (after all, I can't work on songs I don't have...!) Here's my Song List. But like I said, any help you can give will be *MUCHLY* appreciated!!

• Liner notes' lyrics: The liner notes are frequently very wrong, or leave out portions. The liner notes to "Boingo" are especially messed up, in case you didn't notice. At any rate, though we have often employ the liner note lyrics to help us in our lyricking, we don't just type them up, HTML them, and off they go. We sit there for sometimes minutes-hours at a time trying to figure out words, if they don't seem to match what the lyrics say. In the end, though, it's mostly up to judgement. If you think we've made a mistake, please let us know, but keep in mind we really have tried to get it as close as possible.

• Outside Sources: As you know, we do use lyrics for the albums that actually have them. With all other songs, we type them up by ear first, and then go back and check it a couple of times between us. Sometimes we will look up a few words/songs at various other websites that have listing. I do not in any way steal whole songs from any pages, HTML them up to suit my needs and post them. I always go back and check the lyrics countless times for accuracy. Since it is hard to decipher many of the songs, I'll often go and take whole songs/segments of song, and then change them as I see fit. Saves me a little time, but in the long run, not really.
  I also prefer to do the songs in my own style, as well as see how much I can get before seeking assistance.
  We aren't the only lyric page out there, there are quite a few, but I want to be as correct and comprehensive as possible. Therefore, any pre-written lyrics we use are still carefully screened, added to and/or corrected if needed. Of course, mistakes are inevitable, and I am sure they are rampant throughout these lyric pages, so please, again, email me any possible corrections!
  (Note: I used the "Clowns of Death: A History of Oingo Boingo" by Keith T. Breese for help with a few words in the "Fast Times Theme," as well as other various info. I don't know if it is 100% correct, but it's the easiest source I have.)

• Completeness: I am trying to be as complete as possible, meaning I am going to try and type up the lyrics for the songs to the best of my abilities, with every audible word until fadeout included. As usual, if you see something that is wrong or possibly wrong, drop me a line! It's not always easy to get all the vocals straight...
  For the sake of completeness, I often, if not always, will type out choruses every time, instead of just writing (Refrain) or (Chorus.) Though this makes the HTML longer and in some ways more annoying, it is more exact, as often times odd bits of caterwauling or extra words are put in. It might seem like extra work, or extremely stupid, but in order to be as exact as possible, it's necessary!

• Non-Boingo albums/songs: I may or may not post whole albums or selected songs (mostly the ones I feel like lyricking) on the site that are *not* Oingo Boingo, but are Mystic Knights related or various soundtrack stuff. If you have any requests, please send them and I'll see about doing them. (I think there is only Forbidden Zone and The Nightmare Before Christmas, however, so it probably won't be too hard.)

• Rarities/Bootlegs/Etc: I'm going to try to put all rarities and versions of songs who's lyrics differ from the album version or what have you on the site, or at least include notes about them. However, I already know that a lot of them have at least a few words/lines that are questionable if not totally inaudible or understandable. Some songs are almost completely so. These are the songs I need the most help with, and might add a "~" type symbol next to their links to indicate that that song is not very complete. If anyone has any ideas, or solutions, to these songs, it would be greatly appreciated!

• Phrases/Linebreaks/etc: Everybody breaks up songs differently. A lot of times I/we don't type it up as the lyrics in the liner notes have it. We just do it as we see fit, as there are literally hundreds of ways to break up song lyrics. So please don't hassle us about this, because everybody has different preferences, and it would be impossible to appease everyone. Also, typed as in the liner notes, it's merely out of personal preference and style, and not as a personal jab to whoever wrote the lyrics the way they did.

• Caterwauling: Whenever Danny Elfman goes into his funky shouty tirades, we call that caterwauling, for lack of better wording. Basically we try and type as much of this in as possible, but it's usually arbitrary. Stuff like in the beginning of Nasty Habits is pretty impossible, though I tried to get as much as possible. The one in the middle of Controller is absolute suicide though. At any rate, any of the more coherent "Oh whoa"ing stuff we try to type, but leave it pretty much unadorned. I know it looks stupid, but there's not much else to do. If you think there is a portion missing that should be included, please mention it!

• Parenthesis: Parenthesis are used for backing vocals mainly, or anything that isn't the main vocal. Parenthesis are never used for questionable lyric words or phrases, just for backing vocals.

• Asteriks (*'s): I'm going to use these for whenever I think there is a word there, but might not be, if I'm not sure of the word/phrase, or other stuff like that. Basically, if I have something, but I'm not positive it is right, I will put it in asteriks. I only do this because I hate leaving large blank spots. I may also add a slash (/) if there might be more than one possible word we've figured out. However, if you have another suggestion, (or better yet, KNOW what the right word/phrase is) PLEASE email me and I'll look into it straight away!

• Brackets([ ]'s): Similarly, I may write things in brackets before the actual lyrics, if there is anything that is important enough to be said about the song or my lyricking methods or something in the song.

• Spelling/Punctuation/Etc Errors: We're not perfect, but we do try not to make too many stupid grammatical errors. If you see anything that needs correcting, please let us know.

• About My HTMLing: Okay, I obviously suck at HTMLing. But anyway, it's a lyrics page, and doesn't (luckily/hopefully) need any fancy pants HTMLing. I am trying to make it as convenient and easy as possible. I should probably employ frames, but that is a headache in and of itself...
